SOLDADO: A Soldier on the Front Lines

RMC Premier League > SOLDADO: A Soldier on the Front Lines

Apart from scoring goals, Robert Soldado (RMC 2000-2006) also loves a good challenge; even more so when the challenge leads to scoring more goals.  In Spain's last international friendly against Chile (September 10, 2013), Soldado scored to tie the match at the 38th minute of play.  According to football statistician, @2010MisterChip, Soldado's equalizer was his seventh goal in twelve official matches with the national squad, the best record since Fernando Morientes's seven goals in five matches (1998) [1].

Soldado has always been known for his goal-scoring prowess.  With only 15 years of age, he joined Real Madrid Castilla from his local club CF Don Bosco and scored a total of 64 goals in 120 matches.  Soldado became a part of the the first team squad at the age of 20 and made four significant contributions in his 16 total appearances for the team.  One such contribution included the goal for the 2-1 victory against Olympiakos in the UEFA Champions League match on September 28.  Under president Ramon Calderon and head coach Fabio Capello, Soldado saw few minutes in the first team, and he was then sent out on loan to CA Osasuna with the goal of "obtaining more playing time and maturity" before coming back to the capital.  However, a loan to CA Osasuna turned into a transfer to Getafe CF the following year.  After 60 appearances and 29 goals with "Los Azulones," he was picked up by his hometown team Valencia FC where he made a name for himself both domestically and internationally [2]

Soldado's latest international achievement speaks a great deal about his great form at the start of every new season.  It is understandable that players typically need time to adapt to their new environment.  However, Tottenham Hotspur have been able to obtain a forward who has done well coping with his new surroundings and pressure from fans regarding the €30 million they paid Valencia CF for his transfer this past summer.

The Spurs won their first two league encounters against Crystal Palace and Swansea City, respectively, each with a single goal from Soldado from the penalty spot.  In the Europa League qualifiers, the Valencia-born striker helped Tottenham reach the group phases with two goals following a 0-5 marker in the first leg.  In just 324 minutes (253 domestic/71 Europe) and four appearances (3 domestic/1 Europe) for the North-London club, Soldado has been able to put four in the back of the net [3].  Proving his worth time after time, Roberto Soldado is just one of the many great strikers from Real Madrid's reserve team that have made a name for themselves in the world of European football.
