THE PRINCE ASCENDS: Kagelmacher and AS Monaco's Return

RMC Around the World > THE PRINCE ASCENDS: Kagelmacher and AS Monaco Return

March 11, 2013 will be a day remembered by every AS Monaco FC fan.  After two years in the second division of French football, their 1-0 victory over Nimes has granted the Monegasque club to win promotion to the top tier of French football.

The seven-time, French league champion was relegated to Ligue 2 after falling to 18th place in 2010-11 season.  A few months later, the "rouge-et-blanc" were taken over by Russian benefactor Dmitry Rybolovlev with the hopes of returning to the top flight of French and European football.

January of 2012, Gary Christofer Kagelmacher PĂ©rez (April 21, 1988) came to As Monaco from K.F.C. Germinal Beerschot, in the Belgian Pro League, and made 17 appearances in his first season[1].

Having come on loan to Real Madrid Castilla (formally known as Real Madrid B) in 2007 from Danubio FC (Uruguay) with only 19 years of age, the German-Urugayan made a great first impression[2], and the move was made permanent in 2008.   In the 2008-09 season, he made his debut with Real Madrid in the last game of the season; a 2-1 loss to CA Osasuna[3]. In the 2010 summer, he was loaned to Beerschot, making the move permanent in 2011. The following transfer window, Kagelmacher moved to AS Monaco.

His second season in Ligue 2 outfit will be unforgettable.  After winning the confidence of his coach, Claudio Ranieri, the "charrĂșa" had the most appearances (34), only matched by Monaco's goalkeeper Danijel Subasic and Ibrahima Toure[4], top goalscorer for the club[5], while making three goals against Le Harve (2-1 L), Sedan (3-1 W), and Istres (0-2 W)[6]  as a central defender (whoscored.com).

With Kagelmacher in defense, AS Monaco was the third team with less goals scored against (34) behind Caen (24) and Nantes (27), the latter coming in third place in Ligue 2[7].

It is needless to say that Gary Kagelmacher's contribution to Monaco's return to French top-flight is significant.  His performances may have gone unnoticed by some, and Kaglemacher may face some opposition from any new recruits Rybolovlev may want to bring to the principality.  With such names as Radamel Falcao, it is no secret that the Russian billionaire wants to bring the very best players to monarchy.  But, for now, this prince, from Real Madrid's cantera, is making every moment count with the seven-time, French league champions.
